Rotary Club Photography Competition
RIBI celebrates photography as a talent and an art form by offering thousands of young people the chance to demonstrate their photographic skills through the RIBI Young Photographer competition.
This year, the theme is 'People' and entrants are asked to submit a portfolio of three different prints on that theme. The photgraphs should be black and white or colour and on photographic quality paper no larger than A4 size plus a digital copy on disc. In addition, each entrant must provide a description of the inspiration for their photographs and how they reflect the theme in no more than 50 words.
Please visit their website for more information on the categories. It is a prestigious organisation to win an award from.
Go Go Gorillas
Norwich School is proud to have taken part in a charity scheme called GoGoGorillas, which aims to raise money for the Charity Break in Norwich. Over 250 pupils at the school submitted drawings for the project. George McDonald-Bell and Ed Cann from the Design Department scanned, vectorised and vinyl cut all of these drawings and then applied them to the Gorilla. This time lapse video shows a part of the gorilla decoration process before it was eventually varnished. The Gorilla, along with many others will be displayed around Norwich (ours on the Close) and will then be auctioned off at the end of the summer for the charities Break & Born Free.
Thanks must be given to all the pupils involved in creating the designs, the School for supporting the cause and the staff and caretakers involved in helping to make the project happen.

What is the future of photography and film?
For quite a while, if I am brutally honest, I am getting a little bored of a lot of photography. We must see hundreds and thousands of still and moving images on a daily and weekly basis retrospectively. The creation of instagram, the vast online image banks and the sheer accessibility of photography has made it incredibly common. And 'common' to me doesn't often equate to exciting.
This is why for the last 5 or 6 years I have strongly believed that photography needs to evolve just like most of the rest of the fine art world has. It needs to make space for a new wave of 'contemporary photographers' to not only push the boundaries technically but most importantly, conceptually.
But is even this about to change? Is it possible that a photograph or a video will no longer be constructed, composed and captured physically, but digitally?
Have a watch of Alex Roman's video - The Third and the Seventh. The remarkable 12 minute video was not shot with a camera but entirely constructed and animated on Autodesk's 3D studio Max software by one man. Even the stunning music was written by him!
Will we one day be creating our shots digitally where there are no limitations on light, structure, gravity, time of year, location, budget..? Certainly food for thought anyway..
The end of the pottery craft as we know it?
For quite a while now the design world has has been sitting either 'side of a fence' in the never ending argument about 3D printing. But, almost weekly the fence is being broken down by the advent of new 3D printing technologies. Plastics were the first material to fall into the arms of the 3d printer, ever increasing in their detail whilst the cost has plumited but now, metal and ceramics?
Shapeways, a new online based service can offer these services. Farewell to the potters wheel and the limitations of working with clay? Maybe, but it certainly welcomes those 3D designers with technical and artistic skills in software like Creo, Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, Alias, 3D studio Max, Rhino etc etc.
Have you got a 3D design you want printing in ceramic? The Design Department will fund the cost (within reason) for our own research purposes but, you will get to keep it! Talk to Mr Cann for more information or to submit a design.
'18.36.54 home' by daniel libeskind
A beautiful home that ties together contemporary design atonement with its stunning landscape setting.
Incredible material selection and harmonies merge the gaps between contrasting textures and create an amazingly tranquil environment, despite the jagged architectural design.
This is a textbook example of contemporary design that exemplifies the importance of, form, texture, reflection, light and functionality.

Some rather interesting lights by designer Arik Levy. Reminded me of the Adobe illustrator 3D revolve wireframe.

Kick starter your ideas
For many of you with great ideas, ambition and entrepreneurship the world is your oyster.... Until you realise just how much it costs to take an idea to market.
For those of you unaware of 'crowd sourcing' I recommend looking at websites called 'kickstarter' and 'quirky'. I still find it amazing the amount of money the worlds population will pay to sponsor ideas they like.
Ideas on these website vary from film projects, apps, products, furniture ranges, bikes, robots etc etc. Thus, whatever your clever idea maybe this maybe a good way of getting it off the ground.
For those of you questioning how much money there is in 'Design' this should give you some reassurance and show you just how possible it is for you to create a sucessful creative business.
3D scanning and printing
A brief and interesting article showing the new relatively simple process between a physical form and its digital representation and how this can be replicated using a 3D printer.

Ansel Adams - Exhibition at the Maritime Museum
Possibly the greatest ever Landscape photographer, Ansel Adams is currently exhibiting in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich until 28th April. Ansel Adams has had a prolific career from 1925 to 1984. Starting his photography career at the early age of 16, armed with an inadequate Box Brownie, Adams started to produce stunning Landscapes inspired by the natural world, the reflective properties of water and the weather. Later moving to Large Format he produced some of the most iconic Landscapes of our time.
Whilst widely regarded as one of the 'greats' and having enormous expectations of his exhibition I was still not disappointed. His work epitomised the reason and benefit for seeing original work in person. Like listening to a band live rather than on CD, his work took on a new life that I had not seen online or in books. The clarity and depth in his f/64 stop exposures and the perfect tonal range is simply astonishing.
I challenge anyone to be unmoved and not contemplate packing it all in and choosing to wander the American wilderness armed with nothing but a Large Format camera in Adams' footsteps!
This exhibition, twinned with Greenwich, a beautiful riverside 'market town' within London is a day out that promises to be good!

3D Design - V&A Trip
On Friday 1st of February, the release date of the AS & A-level exam papers, the 3D Design department embarked on a trip to London in order to explore and research themes and designers that might inspire their new project.
Most students spent most of their time within the V&A where they were exposed to an abundance of interesting designs ranging from contemporary - Furniture, Jewelry, Architecture, Glasswork etc. to, more traditional sculpture, fashion and metalwork.
They were fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most influential designs of the 20th/21st centuary by designers and architects such as: Bill Dunster, Verner Panton, Sir Norman Foster, Sebastian Brajkovic, Yuya Ushida, Joris Laarman and John Makepeace. (some examples below)
Students spent their time sketching, writing and taking photographs in order to further explore, refine and gather research, which has proved to be an invaluable experience and insight for all those who are now embarking on their design exam projects.
Many thanks to all staff involved.
McCullin
Definitely worth a watch....
"After staring through a viewfinder at unimaginable scenes of desolation, McCullin speaks from the tranquil confines of his country home, and it’s evident that his experiences have stirred a personal conflict. As well as dealing with the trauma of witnessing such horrors, he reflects on his duty as a photographer and a humanitarian. His affecting recollections, and the historic photographs that emanate boundless feeling, are expertly presented in this extraordinary documentary. Do not miss the opportunity to see it on the big screen".

'Kris Moyes' surreal new video for Grizzly Bear
Hanging out in a dreamy meadow by a river, Grizzly Bear lay in the grass whilst stoically performing basic medical tests on one another. Blood tests, ear candles, skin samples and hair tweaking are all shown in twitching, gif form in this beautiful, Dali-esque video by the super-talented Kris Moye.
